Trailers for the latest films - Expendables, Despicable Me and RED

RED
Retired, Extremely Dangerous. This was originally going to be at the bottom of the list as "surprise of the week" as the trailer stunned me when I saw it before A-team at the weekend. It looks amazing. It boasts Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich as....well I don't want to ruin that bit of the trailer - Watch it for yourselves.

So a gang of retired ex-CIA spies in a elaborate fight against their previous employers. Bruce Willis (without his trademark white top I'll add) in a film which could make up for Die Hard 4.0, a paranoid LSD-addled  John Malkovich, Helen Mirren destroying a car with a big ass gun and Morgan Freeman! (his presence alone is amazing and bodes well for the rest of the film).

Less than 40,000 people have seen this video on youtube so enjoy it and count down the days til its October release!

UK Release Date: 15th October 2010

Despicable Me
Family fun with Steve Carell in this animated movie with small little yellow people who remind me of "Chip" from the family quiz show "Catchphrase". But with more arms, personality and a vast array of weapons.

More surprising is the fact that both Julie Andrews and Russell Brand also appear in this film. Andrews as Carell's mother and Brand as his scientific assistant. There are also apparent references to the Lehman Brothers (the local Bank of Evil).  All of which should make this interesting for adults as well as small kids.

Hopefully you like the trailer and now want to watch the movie. Unfortunately if at any point between watching the trailer and the movie you find that you do not like it and find the little yellow people and their inability to talk properly annoying then bad luck - they're already talking of releasing a sequel.

UK Release Date: 15th October 2010

The Expendables
Action-packed trailer boasting the likes of Stallone, Rourke, Statham, Li, Couture and a cameo by Arnie.
It looks like a fast paced movie, just don't expect too much in terms of plot line which was probably secondary to how many explosions can we have (nothing against explosions!).

Every time I see Sylvester Stallone I feel a little bit sick, but I think that the slight nausea derived from his appearance will be overcome to watch what could be a really enjoyable film. Probably more so for guys than girls....

COMING SOON:
The Last Airbender
Knight and Day
Piranha 3D

The Last Airbender
UK Release - 13th August 2010

Below is not the usual trailer with the robed figure putting out candles with his wooden pole before facing hundreds of ships in the distance. This is a more insightful trailer which gives a better overview of the movie, something to really sink your teeth into!

There have been doubts about M. Night Shyamalan's ability but from what I've seen of the trailers he might be able to set things right with The Last AirbenderI'm not saying that it will be as great as Sixth Sense but at the same time it can only be better than The Happening and Signs.

There has been criticism of the film by hard-core animé fans, who dislike everything from the casting to the special effects (which look pretty good from trailers). To be honest I think the only way to placate them would be to scrap the film and release some sort of animation movie (For those not knowing about animé - think of the Pokemon movies...)

...In fact it's probably better if you don't think of them as they were abysmal, think instead of Knight and Day.

Knight and Day
UK Release - 6th August 2010

Starring Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise - wait, don't turn off and dismiss this movie just yet! Tom Cruise has had some trouble in the past but you also need to remember that he has churned out some good films in the past including Mission Impossible (The first one only) and a brief cameo in Tropic Thunder (He's the fat CEO guy who dances at the end of the movie for reference). He may have also done some other films, but I mention these two as I consider Knight and Day to be a cross between the two roles. Watch the trailer to see Cruise playing a government agent who seems to be a bit out of it..."No one follows us, or I kill myself and then her"...

The trailer, complete with Muse soundtrack, looks action packed and it seems that Diaz and Cruise complement each other well.  There are some flaws which stuck out whilst watching the trailer such as when they're on their motorbike Diaz asks for "mags" and then proceeds to put several rounds into their pursuers and cause their car to roll over..?!? I thought she was supposed to be a 'normal' person! I don't think I know many girls who would be able to do that whilst riding the wrong way on a motorbike!

Then again what more could you expect from a comedy-action movie such as Knight and Day which I think will be a great watch even if it is just to laugh at Tom Cruise.

Moving on to the ridiculous movie which has caught my eye today it's Piranha 3D, remake of the 1978 film Piranha which incidentally enough was released as a parody of Jaws but now comes in 3D with more scantily clad hotties and obviously with piranhas instead of sharks...

Piranha 3D
UK Release - 20th August 2010

Take your piranhas, throw in an old scientist and some teenagers on Summer Break for good measure and hey presto one bog-standard thriller.

There was the trailer...very predictable plot it seems: something bad released, "oh no this can kill everyone", "don't go in the water", they go in the water, people die, then survivors have to overcome a stupid number of obstacles such as climbing over a gorge on a rope before being killed off one by one...

I should say something good about the film or even the trailer, yet I can only think of how happy I am that it's not released until the 20th August. The 3D and Ving Rhames (the deputy sheriff who tells everyone over the megaphone about the "emergency situation") may be it's only half-decent features.
